Why is the track so far apart?

Pequot Junction

Coal City, IL

by Joshua Bauer

As well named of a town that could exist. Coal City, Illinois was indeed once a large coal-producing town. This town features the old AT&SF Railway mainline that curves through town and is host to the current end-of-the-line for the Union Pacific Pequot Subdivision. The EJ&E also ran a branch from up north that terminated at Coal City providing the railway with coal mine access. Today the town boasts no such coal mines. It's a clean town with very little to do directly with the railroads it once inspired. The town today instead only has a possible Intermodal terminal project to look forward to if it wishes to once again capture the interest of railroads. That is not to say the area is dead traffic-wise by any means. The ATSF rail line is now the modern BNSF Transcon which boasts a heavy traffic volume.
